Ferrari Limousine Creation Stage 2

The first stage in the actual build process of the stretch Ferrari limousine was to work on the chassis. The existing chassis found in an ordinary Ferrari Modena 360 is an extruded alloy, which has undergone a Cataphoresis process to prevent corrosion. Therefore the new chassis was created to replicate sections of the extruded alloy, but is actually made from 12k carbon fibre reinforcement with a high modulus epoxy resin.

The new laminate of the stretched Ferrari was engineered to provide maximum rigidity to the existing sections of the original sports car, while adding the least amount of extra weight. This was used in longitudinal unidirectional carbon fibres placed on top of the beam sections, to give stiffness through the entire length of the chassis, to ensure it didn’t bend under the weight of the additional six passengers.

The beams are also connected with carbon fibres specially designed for tortional stiffness, to stop the Ferrari limousine from twisting when it takes a corner at high speed, and also allows the passengers to enjoy the feel of the original Ferrari when their chauffeur drives her hard.

During construction the team also made sure that every safety eventuality was covered and even though the stretch Ferrari limousine is very long and low, the possibility of a roll over was still considered. To protect passengers, the Ferrari limousine has two roll hoops, manufactured from carbon composite, bonded to the chassis sections and the centre roof box section. These are the sections which contribute to the overall tortional stiffness of the limousine. The roof box section was also built to accommodate the gull wing doors, with a hinge which distributes the load of the doors through pillars, across the limousine.
